What God Sings About

Oct 13 2023 - Eric Buresh

I realize sometimes I sound like a broken record. Always writing about our dependence on God for every breath and step we take, and the fight to root out remaining pride and self-sufficiency.

You might think that I’m walking around depressed and unhappy because I’m fighting an unwinnable fight – I’m never going to attain the goal (at least in this life). But this couldn’t be further from the truth. While I do fight every day by faith and the power of the Holy Spirit to become more like Christ and to bring Him greater glory through my life, I stand joyfully on the truth that God sees me as already perfect in Jesus. God rejoices over me, and He rejoices over you. In fact, let’s take this one step further, as God watches you and me imperfectly trying to walk the path of life led by the Spirit, He is so overjoyed, that God (yes, the eternal and sovereign God of heaven, seated on His throne), breaks out in song. God sings over you and me.

This is nigh unto impossible for many to believe. I know because I spent many years muddled up in a works-based religion that led to a shame-filled life of constant white-knuckling struggle followed by failure. I no sooner would have believed that God was singing about me than I would believe that angels look like little babies with wings. But listen to God’s revealed words to His people spoken through His prophet Zephaniah:

The Lord your God is in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
(Zephaniah 3:17)

God is singing over you! Can you feel it? Perhaps it is a struggle, and the inner dialogue in your heart and mind cries out:

Nope. God is not singing over me. I’ve done too much wrong. I’m too guilty.

Brother or sister, “the Lord has taken away your judgments.” (vs. 15) If you depend on Christ for your life, the judgments against you are gone! Totally! God is singing over you!

I understand that, but I’m surrounded by people and obstacles that either tell me or show me that I’m not worth anything. They belittle me. They scoff at me. They drag me down and make me feel worthless.

Brother or sister, God “will deal with all who afflict you.” (vs. 19) Let Him fight for you. Let Him deal with those who speak lies to your heart. And know that God is singing over you!

Ok. I believe what you’re saying, but I still can’t feel God rejoicing over me. He’s holy and set apart and just too far away from me. I can’t feel it.

Brother or sister, “the Lord your God in your midst.” (vs 17). If you need to hear this again, “the King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst!” (vs 15). When you received Jesus by faith as the Lord of your life, He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell literally in your midst. On the throne of your heart. He is right there, and He doesn’t miss even the smallest detail of your every moment. And He is singing over you!

I know it can be hard to receive God’s delight. By faith, believe what He is telling you. He is not a liar, and He is always faithful to His word. God is singing over you!
