Jesus, what about my Shame?

Oct 14 2022 - Eric Buresh

We don’t have to be haunted, minimized, backed into a lonely corner, and emotionally controlled by our shame for past evils in our lives. Too much time has been lost to shame. Too many moments of joy are blocked. Too much of God’s glory not proclaimed. Satan exploits every weakness in doctrine to his pathetic ends, and for many of us, shame is one of the dark corners of misunderstanding where he waits for his prey.

We celebrate the indescribable power of Christ’s blood poured out at the cross, and it means so much for us. “And you, being dead in your trespasses, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Col. 2:13-14. Forgiveness! Our debts were paid! Yes! “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” Rom. 5:9. Justified! Saved from wrath! Yes!

But what if we only understand the power of Christ’s blood from God’s perspective? God forgives us, He erases our debts, He imputes righteousness to us, He considers justice served on our behalf, He turns His wrath away from us. Praise Jesus for all of those miracles. But, Jesus, what about my Shame? I totally believe you forgave me, and I totally believe you see me as perfectly righteousness, but I still remember, I still have nightmares, I still see terrible replays, I still try to avoid those quiet places that make me feel the coldness, I still hate that person that I sense remains in me somewhere. I still feel shame. Please, Jesus, what about my Shame?

Oh, precious saint, you have to know how thoroughly Jesus’ blood has cleansed you. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin!” 1 John 1:7. Don’t buy Satan’s lie – God did not send Jesus to the cross for a partial cleaning. No! Jesus’ blood totally purifies – all the way to the deepest parts of your soul. Hear this Word and meditate on it until your heart believes it – “For if the blood of bulls and goats [ ] sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Heb. 9:13-14. Jesus’ blood flows into the very center of your conscience where Shame hides out, and totally cleanses it from the dead deeds that have haunted us for too long. Jesus bought our clean conscience for a precious price. He evicted Shame. This is an unbelievable miracle within a flowing river of unbelievable miracles that is Jesus’ blood! We are set free to serve the living God! Hallelujah!

Receive all that Jesus did for you. Not just part of it. Take all the ground He won, and don’t give any of it back to Satan. “Come now, and let us reason together, Says the LORD, Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18. The stain and Shame are completely and totally gone; washed by His blood. When unbelief attacks, run back to the cross and ask: Jesus, what about my Shame? Hear His words as many times as you need – child, “IT IS FINISHED.”

Therefore there is now no condemnation in Christ, for in Christ we cannot be condemned. We are heirs to the King above all kings. This King, King Jesus, looked at shame and counted it as nothing. Shame was so disesteemed for the joy of bringing His father glory and his followers to glory that shame stands no more! On the cross Christ counted shame as finished, no longer to have rule and reign on the earth. Now the one that sits at the right hand of God has made shame his footstool… We are free of the shackles of shame, so run the race with JOY!
