God in the Mundane

Aug 9 2022 - Justin Raby

Why do you not typically see glory in the ordinary? Think about the movies we watch, when was the last time you witnessed an ordinary, mundane, boring person saving the day or being the hero. Our culture is so fascinated with the extraordinary, the special, the significant, and if we take an internal inventory and are truthful with ourselves we often want to be those people (Is it just me?). There is a reason your favorite indie flick has only been seen by a couple people and the Marvel Universe suite are the top grossing movies of all time. There is an almost insatiable desire to be special. I want to make my mark on my friend groups, our church, and have a deep desire to make a dent in this world, and a fear bubbles up that in fact I may not be significant, I may not be able to prompt this world to be different. Our failure to see glory in the mundane speaks to our perspective that is quite a few degrees off. From this perspective we don’t see accurately.

When we have an accurate view of Christ our eyes begin to open to see how the mundane is not so mundane. We stop asking where Christ is while I am mowing the yard, washing the car and sitting in my cubicle. We start to see Him everywhere. We start to realize that Christ knows us and we know Him! That is not boring, that is not sleepy, that is glorious! He is in the mundane and ordinary, which is NOT mundane and ordinary! The scripture even says that He thinks about me (Psa 40:17). If Christ has called us, and justified us, and will glorify us, does it matter to be significant in this world? When the most Significant, Supreme, All-powerful Being (The Father, Son and Spirit) knows my name and calls me into a relationship, do I care about being “a somebody” any longer? Is anything ordinary when we realize that God is truly sovereign and every dust particle, roll of the dice and human in the universe was given purpose by the Almighty? The new question is how do I worship the wonderful Christ, and help others to do the same? The search for significance is found in the Significant One, have you looked for Him today?
