The Faith To Stand Still

May 27 2025 - Eric Buresh

“The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”

—Exodus 14:14

I talked to two people from two different churches this week who were both studying Exodus 14 so I figured the Lord wanted to remind me of it as well. It’s a familiar passage, but so rich!

Picture the scene: the Israelites, newly freed from bondage, are trapped. Before them stretches the Red Sea. Behind them thunder the chariots of Egypt. The horizon is water; the echo is war. The people panic. Fear grips their hearts. They cry out to Moses—not in faith, but in despair.

And what does God have Moses say?

“Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today.” (v.13)

What grace! What sovereignty! What power! In the moment of greatest terror, when the enemy was real and the escape invisible, God did not panic—He promised. He did not explain—He delivered.

This passage is not only history—it is holy counsel for our souls. When you find yourself surrounded, hemmed in by circumstances, pursued by dread, and powerless to advance, remember: the same God who parted the sea is still on the throne.

We must not forget who orchestrated this moment. It was the Lord who led His people by the wilderness. It was the Lord who brought them to the shore. The trap was not accidental—it was intentional. Why? That His glory might be revealed, and that His people, including us, might never forget who saves.

Your God does not make mistakes.

Stand still.”  This is not passivity. This is the faith that says, “I will not act in panic. I will not speak in unbelief. I will wait for the Lord.” It takes more strength to be still in faith than to move in fear. Stillness is not weakness—it is worship. Faith defies fear!

The Lord will fight for you.” What comfort! We do not need to conjure victory—it is the Lord who wars on our behalf.  His arm is not shortened, His power is not spent. Remember: God is not a spectator. He is a shield, a sword, a refuge, and a fortress. He who drowned Pharaoh’s armies has not lost a single ounce of strength. He is not late. He is not uncertain. He is not weak. He is the Lord of hosts. And He fights for you.
