Why Us?

David, under the starlit heavens, pondered the majesty of God. His eyes beheld the vastness of creation, and his heart swelled with wonder: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4) Amid the grandeur of God’s creation, David asks, Why would God concern Himself with us? This question is important for all of us to regularly consider.
David’s question begins with awe at our own smallness. When we consider the scope of the universe—the stars like grains of sand, each one set in place by God’s infinite power—what are we? Man is but a speck, a fleeting vapor on the face of the earth, here today and gone tomorrow. Yet, our smallness in no way limits God’s care for us. God, in all His greatness, is mindful of man! The Almighty stoops to consider those who are infinitely beneath Him. What wondrous love! He who spoke galaxies into existence attends to each heartbeat, each cry, each prayer. Even in our insignificance, we are significant to God.
But David doesn’t merely ask why God remembers us; he asks why God cares for us. The Hebrew word here implies not only awareness but deep care, a compassion that draws near. Consider this: the Holy God not only notices us but bends His heart toward us. His is a love that will not ignore the plight of even the lowest of men. God cares for the widow, the orphan, the brokenhearted. He is not a distant God, removed from our lives; He is near, a present help in times of trouble. Our trials, our needs, our cries—they are all before Him.
How has He shown this care? In the ultimate display of love, He sent His Son, Christ Jesus, to redeem us. Man was created in God’s image but marred by sin. We were lost, separated from our Creator by rebellion. But God, in His infinite love, remembered us even in our fallen state. “What is man?” Man is the one whom God loved enough to redeem at the cost of His own Son. In Jesus, God demonstrated His care in the most profound way, reconciling us to Himself through the cross.
Yes, man in his sin has fallen far, but in Christ, we are lifted to glory! Man is not only redeemed; he is destined to reign with Christ. God’s purpose for man is not only to save him but to raise him up and bring him into His own perfect presence. When we are in Christ, we are co-heirs with Him, seated in heavenly places. He calls us sons and daughters, and He delights to share His eternal life with us.
Considering this, what should our response be? Humility and praise! Who are we to receive such care and love? We are nothing, yet God has placed His love upon us and given us the most valuable of gifts: Himself. Our hearts should bow in humble adoration before Him who is so mindful of us. And our voices should rise in praise. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”
