The Greek word is dynamis, from which we draw our word “dynamite.” It is strength, ability, force beyond human capacity. Timid disciples, scattered and afraid, were to be transformed into powerful witnesses for Jesus. What would bring the change? The Holy Spirit!

The Christian life is not a mere profession of belief, nor a cold adherence to doctrine. It is a living reality: “Christ dwelling in your hearts through faith.” The word Paul uses here suggests more than a guest visiting; it is Christ making His home within us—filling the rooms, shaping the atmosphere, rearranging what does not belong, until our very hearts are His dwelling place.

It is a sorrowful truth that many saints speak of salvation only in the past tense. “I was saved when I was sixteen,” one says. “I came to Christ back in my youth,” says another. As if the great miracle of new life were but a single note struck long ago—beautiful, yes, but now fading into silence. But I tell you, friends, salvation is not merely the crossing of the threshold—the God who called you out of darkness is the same God who calls you still—guiding, correcting, comforting, and speaking into the very core of your being.

Mercy in the Light

Let us not trifle with sin. Sin is any act or thought, whether it be morally good or morally bad, that we do in pursuit of our own way (the path of spiritual death) rather than dependently following Jesus in His Way (the path of spiritual life). The world may paint sin as a trinket, and the devil may whisper it is no big deal—but to the soul, sin is a grief, a burden, a sickness leading to spiritual death.
