Read 1 Thessalonians 5

For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ…”

1 Thessalonians 5:9

I was recently told a story about an interaction between two believers. One of them told the other that he feels he has to preach the gospel to himself daily. In my head I pictured this man literally standing in front of a mirror telling himself he is loved and forgiven day after day. The idea of preaching the gospel to myself daily has come up many times in my own head since the day I heard the story. When is the last time you preached the gospel to yourself? Reminding yourself that you are loved and forgiven. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 is such a great reminder of this truth. We ARE NOT destined for wrath; we ARE destined for salvation.

When I forget to remind myself of these truths, I also often forget to show these truths to others. In other words, when I don’t feel love and grace it is hard to give love and grace.  The idea of preaching the gospel to yourself is not just an encouragement to you, but to those you interact with as well. When we remind ourselves of the love and grace Jesus has shown to us, we are much more likely to show that love and grace to others.

Perhaps we can all take a moment today to speak the gospel to ourselves, and allow it to be our reminder to be and speak the gospel to others.
