Read 1 Thessalonians 1

“You became imitators of us and of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 1:6).

The Bible has a word for those who follow the Lord… disciples. A disciple is essentially a learner or follower of Jesus. However, we don’t follow Jesus just to tag along or have our needs met. We follow him with a purpose… to become like Him. That is why Jesus said, “Everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40).

How do we become imitators of the Lord? One way to imitate Jesus is to imitate those who are faithfully following Him. In 1 Corinthians 11:1 Paul said, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ.”

I am thankful that I’ve had a life-long godly example to follow since coming to Christ as a teenager. Early on as a new Christian I crossed paths with a man who walks with God (he’s now my father-in-law!). I’ve learned so much about what it means to follow Jesus simply by watching his example… How he spends time with God, how he leads, how he cares for people, how he navigates through difficult times. Today he’s in his mid-80’s and is still faithfully serving God.

Look around you. In your journey to become a follower of the Lord, can you identify someone who models what that looks like? Watch that person… learn from them… follow their example… it will take you further down the road of becoming more like Jesus!
