Wonderfully Made Special Needs conference is dedicated to providing “Strength for Today, and Hope for Tomorrow for families, ministry leaders, and professionals working with individuals with special needs. This two day conference will have three tracks available so attendees can engage in specialized breakout sessions designed to empower your involvement in the special needs community.  We are also excited to announce we will have Joni Eareckson Tada and Diane Dokko Kim joining us as our keynote speakers! Joni Eareckson Tada

Joni Eareckson Tada

Bio
Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder and CEO of Joni and Friends International Disability Center, is an international advocate for people with disabilities. A diving accident in 1967 left Joni Eareckson, then 17, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair. After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with new skills and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations. She founded Joni and Friends in 1979 to provide Christ-centered ministry to special-needs families, as well as training for churches. Joni and Friends serves thousands of special-needs families through Family Retreats, and has delivered over 170,000 wheelchairs and Bibles to needy
individuals with disabilities in developing nations. Joni survived stage III breast cancer in 2010, yet keeps a very active schedule. Her newest book, A Spectacle of Glory, won best devotional book in the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association’s 2017 Christian Book Awards – it contains fresh biblical insights from her battle with chronic pain. Joni is General Editor of Tyndale’s Beyond Suffering Bible, a special edition published for those who suffer chronic conditions, and their caregivers. Diane Dokko Kim

Bio
Diane is a special needs ministry consultant, speaker, and author of Unbroken Faith: Spiritual Recovery for the Special Needs Parent (Worthy 2018). She is also the parent of a child with multiple disabilities including autism and ADHD. In 2004, her son’s diagnoses triggered a profound crisis of faith. With the comfort she received from Christ, her two-fold passions include encouraging struggling families, and equipping local churches into becoming inclusive faith communities. Since 2008, Diane has partnered with Joni and Friends as a national speaker and ministry ambassador. Her work has been featured in Christianity TodayParenting Magazine, Moody Radio, Key Ministry, and Orange’s Parent CueDiane and her husband, Eddie, live in Silicon Valley with their two sons. Bio

Dr. Stephen “Doc” Hunsley is the SOAR Special Needs Director and Pastor for Grace Church in Overland Park and Olathe, Kansas. Doc started Grace Church’s special needs ministry in 2011, helping it to become a hallmark ministry for the church. The SOAR (Special Opportunities, Abilities, and Relationships) special needs ministry serves over 800 individuals with special needs through weekend church programming, family support groups, and regular respite events. SOAR also has adult programming on the weekend, a VBS, and a Special Needs Day Camp in the summer.  Doc founded and leads the Kansas City Special Needs Ministries Network, for area church leaders. He is currently assisting over 175 churches locally and nationally to start a Special Needs Ministry. Doc is also organizing the Wonderfully Made Conference to be held in October 2018 in Kansas City. Prior to serving as a special needs pastor, Doc was a children’s pastor. Doc is a retired pediatrician while his wife, Kay, continues practicing pediatrics. They are proud parents to three beautiful children: Luke, Mark and Sarah. The Hunsley’s middle child, Mark, is presently running the halls of heaven. During Mark’s five-year earthly stay, he gave his family the opportunity to learn from and love a child with autism. Bio

Amy has a double bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Brigham Young University and began working in the field of developmental disabilities in 1995.  Working with individuals with disabilities for the last 23 years from infants to senior citizens has given her a great insight into issues faced across the lifespan.

Amy became the Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Guild in January of 2003.  During the past 15 years she has been responsible for overseeing dramatic growth and expansion of the organization which now serves 1,600 members, 22 hospitals, 45 school districts and dozens of service providers.  

Amy became the Chief Operating Officer of the DSG in 2018. Under Amy’s leadership, DSG has grown to be one of the premier Down syndrome associations in the United States. She has increased the staff, budget and programs delivered in a short period of time thereby impacting thousands of lives. Amy is a sought after consultant and speaker in the Down syndrome community based on her expertise.

Steve Grcevich

Founder & President of Key Ministry

Bio
Dr. Stephen Grcevich (MD, Northeast Ohio Medical University) serves as the founder and President of Key Ministry. He is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who combines over 25 years of knowledge gained through clinical practice and teaching with extensive research experience evaluating medications prescribed to children and teens for ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Grcevich has been a presenter at over 35 national and international medical conferences and is a past recipient of the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). His first book, Mental Health and the Church was published by Harper Collins/Zondervan in February 2018.

Bio

Jolene Philo is the mother of a son born with life-threatening special needs and the daughter of a father severely affected by multiple sclerosis. In her 25 years as an educator, she integrated children with special needs into her classroom. She’s written 5 books about caregiving, special needs parenting, and childhood PTSD. She is currently co-writing a book with Dr. Gary Chapman about how parents of kids with special needs can use the 5 love languages in their families. Jolene speaks at conferences around the country and internationally, facilitates classes about childhood trauma for educators, and trains special needs ministry leaders and volunteers. She blogs at www.DifferentDream.com. She and her husband live in Iowa.

Bio

Dr. Lamar Hardwick is a father, husband, pastor and best selling author.  Lamar holds a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University as well as a Doctor of Ministry degree from Liberty University School of Divinity. In 2014, after years of silently struggling with social anxiety and sensory processing issues, Dr. Hardwick was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He is the author of Epic Church as well as his best selling book, I am Strong: The Life and Journey of an Autistic Pastor. Lamar is the pastor of New Community Church located in Lagrange, GA.

Bio

Jean Wetherilt, OTR/L is a pediatric occupational therapist with over 30 years experience treating children of all ages with various challenges. Jean and her husband are the founders and owners of PossAbilities Children’s Therapy Group, an independent clinic based in Merriam, Kansas providing occupational, speech and physical therapy services in the KC metropolitan area. Her advanced clinical training includes areas of sensory processing, neurodevelopment, fine motor development, reflex integration and handwriting. She is passionate about the role of parents in the therapy and education of their children and has helped countless families navigate the raising and teaching of children with learning challenges. This same drive to help children and their families spills over into volunteer work; helping local churches to start and strengthen their special needs ministries, serving as the struggling learners coordinator for Midwest Parent Educators and working internationally with ministries in Guatemala providing assistance to children with special needs. When not providing therapy, she enjoys traveling to visit her own adult children and their families including 2 grandchildren.
